Were did the myth of the poisoned apple spawn from?

I have been wondering this becasue it seems as though in both real life and in literature and entertainment it's featured promenantly as the worst possible way that you can die and was used in ancient times by those that wanted power or were greedy so they would poison the person's food in order to kill them and hopefully succeed their rule. I know that in the bible in the adam and eve story that that's prominent only the reason why humans became imperfect was because they were tempted to biting the apple by the snake "devil" as well as other things. but I have seen it pop up in childrens cartoons such as snow white and others so i was wondering were this came from and why so many people use it in their stories.I'm not a deeply religious individual but i'd like to know were this came from and why? any answers would be appreciated.
