How is the Catholic church defending allegations of a cover up over child abuse?

I have been reading reports of this in the papers but don't seem to get any idea of the defense that the Catholic church are putting up over their behaviour in this situation. Am I correct in uming that they knew about abuse but kept it hidden and allowed priests to remain in their posts? If so now how are they defending this position? What is the arguement they are using?
